Teacher: Gary Coull

Gary began dancing at the age of 10 in Dufftown, Scotland with Jessie Stuart as his teacher and gained his full teaching certificate in 2013. Gary has taught at various weekend and day schools in Scotland and Europe including the RSCDS International Branch weekend in Copenhagen and the 40th anniversary weekend of the Stockholm Branch. He has taught at the RSCDS Summer School as well as the 2016 West End Workshop in Toronto and he dances with the RSCDS Aberdeen demonstration team.



Class musician: Bill Ewan

Bill started piano lessons at the age of 5. At 15 years old he began playing for Scottish country dance classes. Around the same time he joined a Scottish dance band and since then played with various bands. Bill has made numerous recordings and frequently plays on BBC Radio Scotland’s Take The Floor. His music has taken him all around Scotland and the UK and further afield to Europe, Australia and USA. Bill has played for the RSCDS summer school in St. Andrews for the past 15 years.




Evening dances: David Oswald Scottish Dance Band

David Oswald, Accordion
David started playing the accordion at the age of 7 and was taught by Willie Gordon at the Bill Wilkie School of music in Perth. During this time David played in the Bill Wilkie Accordion Orchestra each year at the All Scotland Accordion Championships, the pinnacle of the competition calendar. David attended the Accordion & Fiddle Clubs in his local area and this gave opportunities to form impromptu bands with other musicians. This led to David being asked to join The Glencraig SDB and resulted in David playing all over Scotland at Dances, Ceilidhs and recording with the band regularly for BBC Radio Scotland Take the Floor from the age of 16. David went on to form his own band in the 1990s and the band too has regularly featured on BBC Radio Scotland since 1995. From the band’s start, David had a passion for playing for RSCDS and he has played for Dances and Balls all over Scotland, England and Northern Ireland. The band have done SCD holidays abroad to Portugal, Spain, Tunisia and Cyprus to name a few places and played for weekend schools such as Iberian Peninsular in Spain, they were the first „live“ band for the weekend! David has played at RSCDS Summer School both as a solo musician and with his band at the Thursday night Younger Hall Dance. David was also part of Marian Anderson’s band at Winter School in Perth Western Australia in 2013. Away from the band, David has his own business and lives in Kippen, a small village to the West of Stirling with his wife and 3 teenage kids.

Alasdair Macleod, Accordion
Alasdair started playing the accordion at the age of 7 and was taught by the well know accordionist, Jack Delaney from Alloa. Alasdair is one of the top respected harmony accordionist currently playing in Scotland. Alasdair has been in the band for several years and adds great depth to the band. Alasdair is also a bandleader in his own right and has done several recordings for BBC Scotland Take the Floor. He too has travelled extensively including Florida, Singapore and various European destinations. Away from the band, Alasdair is one of the assistant Managers at the famous Loch Lomond Golf Course. He is married to Laura and lives in Croftamie.

Andrew Barrie, Drums
Andrew has been playing the drums since the age of 13, originally learning the full drum kit at high school but then after being asked to join the Big Squeeze Ceilidh Band, he listened to many country dance recordings and self-taught himself the traditional idiom, influenced by Gordon Smith, one of Scotland’s leading traditional drummers. Andrew has been with the band for several years and adds his own dynamic drive and innovation to the distinctive band sound. When not playing in the band, Andrew is a Director of his own business which he started 2 years ago. By the time the band play in Munich, Andrew will have married Lisa and they stay in Biggar, Lanarkshire.
